Call for Art — Exhibition at Scottsdale Civic Center Public Gallery in the Civic Center Library, 3839 N Drinkwater Boulevard, Scottsdale AZ 85251

 STICK TOGETHER: Collage exhibition - on display, July 12, 2024 – September 23, 2024
 The Stick Together exhibition features collage artwork that illustrates the importance of community, friendship, love, and unity. 

Collage is an art form that utilizes sticking, gluing, pasting, weaving, or otherwise bringing together images, materials, and ideas to create a multi-layered artwork of new meaning. Assemblage, photomontage, found art, decoupage, street art paste-ups, stickers, and stencils can be utilized in collage. 

Co-curated by Airi and Riho Katsuta of Cut+Paste Phoenix, a collage collective dedicated to fostering a sense of community through creative, tactile, and meaningful experiences for individuals of all ages and skill levels. 

 GALLERY INFORMATION: Artworks can be any size up to 52 inches wide x 52 inches long for wall hanging. Recommended sculptural dimension limits for pedestals are 20 inches high x 15 inches deep x 15 inches wide. The gallery is 680 square feet, with 8-foot-tall walls, electric and data availability in the floor, and a cable and latch-hook hanging system. The gallery walls shall not be pierced or affected by the art installation and the hanging system must be used. D-rings must be on the back of artwork to accommodate the hanging system. Wall-hung artworks shall not be heavier than 90 pounds each. Artworks are insured while on display. Exhibiting artists are eligible for an honorarium.   Selected artists are responsible for the delivery and pick-up of artwork. We do not cover shipping. The artwork will be installed under the direction and support of the Scottsdale Public Art preparatory staff. Work must meet gallery standards, be professionally presented, and be ready to hang/install when brought for installation.  
  Please note: Existing artwork that fits this theme may be submitted for this call. The artwork must be acceptable for all ages. Artwork is not presented for sale at the gallery. All purchase inquiries are directed to the artist.

Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation offers programs and experiences to inspire the hearts and minds of our diverse community. One of Learning & Innovation's most expansive programs, Cultural Connections Through the Arts, offers a broad range of school residencies to support classroom curriculum and to elevate aspiring artists to the next level. We are seeking artists and/or educators to lead classroom-based poetry and spoken word residency services.

Service Summary

Artist-educator will lead weeklong, in-school residencies for English language arts classes for grades 6-10 with goals of inspiring students to write, encouraging a deeper level of understanding of and appreciation for poetry’s usages, and, ultimately, helping them to break down barriers and build communities through stories.

Each residency is an independently contracted service. Services may begin as early as September 2021 and extend through May 2022. Residencies are typically formatted five days (one week) with one hour per day, per class. The number of classrooms served will vary by school. Residency service dates can be flexible based upon the availability of the teaching artist and classroom teacher(s). The teaching artist should be prepared to provide a structured lesson plan on each date of service.

Requirements

Artist must be able to:

  • Travel throughout Phoenix, Paradise Valley, and Scottsdale.
  • Obtain an IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card through State of Arizona Department of Public Safety.
  • Educate and engage students in a classroom setting.
  • Be consistent and reliable.
  • Follow all health and safety guidelines as set by local school districts and Scottsdale Arts while performing contracted duties.

Compensation

  • Artist will be paid for residency services at a rate of $55 per hour.
  • Additional preparation hours are included.
  • Approved supplies will be purchased or reimbursed.

Scottsdale Arts' Learning & Innovation department seeks teaching artists specializing in the performing arts, e.g., dance, drama, music, puppetry, storytelling, etc., to join its regional arts integration, in-classroom residency program, Arizona Wolf Trap.  

By working with educators to integrate the arts into content areas like language arts, math, and science, Arizona Wolf Trap teaching artists help young learners stimulate their imaginations and develop academic, social, and physical skills that are the foundation for future learning and healthy lifestyles. 

Arizona Wolf Trap teaching artists participate in ongoing professional development to work with and support early childhood educators, caregivers, and families as they incorporate arts-integrated experiences into classrooms, early childhood environments, and home and community settings. 

What is Arizona Wolf Trap? 

Backed by more than 30 years of experience and affiliated with the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts in Vienna, VA, Arizona Wolf Trap leverages the power of the performing arts to engage successful learners and empower educators. 

Using a research-informed approach to arts-integrated professional development, the program offers effective and customized professional development delivered by teaching artists to support educators, caregivers, children, and families. Offerings include residencies, partial and full-day workshops, and digital arts education resources. Residencies occur in classrooms across the Phoenix metro area and include multiple 30-minute sessions across several weeks. 

Required Qualifications 

  • Availability to work as an independent contractor in the Phoenix metro area 
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a professional artist and/or teaching artist in a performing arts discipline (dance, drama, puppetry, drama, and storytelling) 
  • Thorough knowledge of the elements, forms, processes, and skills of specified art discipline(s) 
  • Ability to articulate the creative process in or through specified art discipline(s) 
  • Desire and ability to reflect on and assess methods of artistic practice 
  • Desire to engage in regular, ongoing professional learning supporting best practices in early childhood education, arts integration, and adult learning 
  • Demonstration of cultural competence and respect for individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, and belief systems 
  • Strong professional conduct as consistently demonstrated by preparedness, punctuality, reliability, and organizational skills 
  • Exceptional verbal and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Strong ability to work effectively and collaboratively with adult learners 
  • Access to reliable transportation and willingness to travel within the Phoenix metro area  

Desired Qualifications 

  • Experience teaching and/or working with young children and their families 
  • Experience with educators and other professionals engaged in work with young children and their families 
  • Excellent written communication skills and ease with using email as a means of communication 
  • Understanding of Arizona Department of Education early childhood standards
  • Comfort using or learning to use online video platforms (Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.) 
  • Weekday availability for contracting opportunities (Monday - Friday between 9:00 am 5:00 pm)
  • Multiple language skills are a plus but not required.

Compensation & Training

Arizona Wolf Trap teaching artist candidates are required to complete a multi-day training before beginning their work. Teaching artist candidates must attend the full training and will receive compensation for their attendance. 

Arizona Wolf Trap teaching artists must complete multiple classroom residencies within their first year. Specific details of individual work will be discussed with members upon completion of the new artist training. 

Arizona Wolf Trap teaching artists are independent contractors. The number of contracts a Wolf Trap teaching artist is offered annually is not guaranteed.  

Starting pay is $55/hour. 

Canal Convergence 2024: Request for Temporary Public Art Proposals: Phase I
 

Deadline: Wednesday, April 24, 2024, 11:59 p.m. Arizona time (year-round daylight standard time).
 

Budget: We will accept budgets between $5,000 and $35,000 (USD).
 

Eligibility: All local, regional, and international artists, artist teams, architects, designers, and multimedia specialists are invited to submit a proposal. International artists who apply must have remote installation as an option for their proposal.
 

Location: Scottsdale, Arizona, USA.
 

Description: Canal Convergence seeks proposals for outdoor, temporary public artworks to be featured in and around the Arizona Canal at the Scottsdale Waterfront in Scottsdale, Arizona. Canal Convergence will be on view for ten days, from Nov. 8–17, 2024. Some projects may be selected to remain installed for an additional 1–2 months after the Canal Convergence event dates. This call is specifically targeting outdoor, light-based installations. Nighttime presence/activation is required; daytime presence/activation is encouraged.
 

Artwork Considerations for Canal Convergence 2024: 

  • Propose an artwork that speaks to the 2024 featured theme, Reflections.
  • Present multiple (2-3) installations for the event that can be shipped to and from Canal Convergence in the same truck, container, etc.
  • Propose art installations that are able to be located in smaller, more narrow sections of the ground, ground that is not level, and/or integrated into the landscaping without damaging or destroying any plants.
  • Submit art installation proposals that do not require 24-hour security.
  • Propose an artwork that encourages reflection on environmental issues relevant to the Arizona community. Some examples include water rights and conservation, heat mitigation efforts, etc.
     

This call is Phase I of II. Phase I asks artists to focus primarily on the proposal concept, images, rendering, and estimated total budget. Once Phase I closes on April 24, 2024, up to 30 proposals will be selected for Phase II via Scottsdale Public Art staff review. These artists will be asked to provide more detailed information on their proposals, which will be presented to a final selection panel composed of Scottsdale Arts staff and advisory board members, the city of Scottsdale and Salt River Project staff, and community stakeholders. Required additional information for Phase II will include, but not be limited to, a detailed timeline, itemized budget, support crew, heavy equipment and power requirements, etc.
